Every year, thousands of girls in Zimbabwe are victims of early marriage, sexual assault, and trafficking. In many parts of Africa, including Zimbabwe, there is a belief that having sex with a virgin will cure a man of HIV/AIDS. Because of this outrageous myth, many very young girls are raped.
The square earrings are dedicated to Betty Makoni and the girls at the Girl Child Network.
Betty Makoni is the founder and director of the Girl Child Network (GCN). The GCN has established clubs across Zimbabwe that encourage girls to stand up for their rights. The Girl Child Network also has three shelters providing emergency care and support for abused girls. They also pay school fees for those who cannot afford an education.
At great risk to herself, Betty Makoni and the Girl Child Network have exposed many high-profile sex offenders publicly. In time, this will help change the attitude in Zimbabwe and put an end to sex abuse.
When you buy this pendant proceeds go to the Girl Child Network to provide medical care, safety, food and shelter for these girls.
